The Department of History offers a doctoral degree in three major fields: North America, Europe, and World. The objective of the graduate program is to prepare students for careers in research and teaching.

Description

Carefully structured and individualized graduate programs in all fields afford maximum personal contact and consultation between graduate students and professors in seminars, directed individual readings, lecture courses, and supervised thesis research and writing. The faculty makes every effort to provide a creative environment to sustain a community of scholars and a substantial part of all graduate students' training is in small seminars. Students have several resources available to them including the archives of the Nebraska State Historical Society and the Center for Great Plains Studies.

Applying for Admission

Standard requirements for all graduate programs

Application for Admission with $50 non-refundable application fee.
Transcripts (unofficial): Uploaded as part of application form.
_{If International: Uploads must include all college- or university-level transcripts or mark sheets (records of courses and marks earned), with certiﬁcates, diplomas, and degrees plus certiﬁed English translations.}

_{After admission: Official documents are required from all students who are admitted and enroll. Photocopies of certiﬁed records are not acceptable. International students enrolled in other U.S. institutions may have certiﬁed copies of all foreign records sent directly to the Office of Graduate Studies by their current school’s registrar office.}
If applicant’s native language is not English, verification of English proficiency is required.

If applicant is not a US citizen and expects an F or J visa: financial information.
Applicants must also fulfill any additional requirements the department specifies at the time of application.

Additional requirements specific to this program

Minimum English proficiency: Paper TOEFL 575, Internet TOEFL 90, IELTS 6.5
Personal Statement: In 1-2 pages, this statement should explain your interest in pursuing this degree and give a strong sense of your intellectual interests and background
Writing Sample: A paper previously written by the applicant; although there is no standard page limit, these are typically 10-30 pages in length.
Faculty and Research Interest: List two to three departmental faculty you would like to work with.
Languages: See current language requirements.
Three recommendation letters.
